After the tragic shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. yesterday, the media was quick to jump on the anti-gun bandwagon. The dust hasn’t even settled, and Senator Dianne Feinstein is already calling for a new ‘assault weapon’ ban.
The media has been focusing on how the shooter was found with a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 ‘assault rifle’. But, is this just an attempt to demonize the popular sporting rifle used by civilians?
NBC News4 reported that the shooter used a shotgun to commit the crime. The shooter later armed himself with weapons that he took from his victims.
When it was over, the suspected gunman lay dead amid an armload of weapons. Sources told News4 that surveillance footage showed that he began his attack with a shotgun, but was found with a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle. The suspected gunman appeared to have seized firearms from two of his victims as he moved through the building. Survellance video shows the gunman entered the NAVSEA building, at 1336 Isaac Hull Ave., with a shotgun.
In another article from NBC News in Washington D.C., they reported:
A shotgun used in the shooting was purchased just last week at gun store in Lorton, Va., authorities said. Authorities said they believe that Alexis [the shooter] then picked up two other weapons — a handgun and an AR-15-style assault weapon — during the shooting spree, taking the sidearm from a police officer he shot and another from a gunsafe or other secure location.
Since this was a military base, they would most likely stock the the M4 / M16A3 rifle in the armory. These are the military weapons the popular “AR” civilian sporting rifles are based on. These are exclusively used by military and law enforcement and have a “selective fire” switch which can change the rate of fire of the weapon (e.g. fully automatic or 3 round burst). They can also be fitted with hardware like bayonets and grenade launchers. These weapons are not for sale to civilians and have been illegal since 1986. Many are stamped: ‘Restricted Military/Government/Law Enforcement Only’
Since 1993, the bolt carrier groups used in AR-15 type rifles for civilians have also employed additional measures to prevent modification. They use a metal alloy wall separating the fire control group from the sear, preventing civilians from converting them to fully automatic weapons. The rifles used by the military are NOT the same as those sold to civilians. The killer didn’t even own an AR-15, he used a shotgun to begin his murderous rampage.
Sadly, these facts won’t stop the media and anti-gun politicians from demonizing modern sporting rifles. They will be calling for more “assault weapon” bans on civilian models of the AR-15. Many people are already questioning the Clinton-era gun bans that are in place on military bases. Gun free zones are most likely the cause of the high death tolls encountered in these massacres. If soldiers were allowed to defend themselves on base, these murderers would be stopped immediately.
The mainstream media loves to go after “scary” looking rifles. It’s easy to create confusion because non-gun owners know very little about firearms. The media and the politicians use this ignorance to push anti-gun laws. It’s up to us, the vigilant gun owners, to point out the truth. Don’t let the media use horrible tragedies (like the Naval Yard Shooting) to spread fear and advance their anti-gun agenda. Civilian AR-15’s were not to blame. Banning modern sporting rifles will not prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future. Don’t let the gun grabbers use lies to take away more of our rights!
