Navy Yard Shooter Used Shotgun, Media Pushes ‘Assault Weapon’ Ban

September 17, 2013

| I've lived all over the US and found that most Americans love liberty but, get fooled into partisan politics. My goal is to wake people up and help them see it's not about left or right -- it's about freedom!

Opinions from Liberty Crier contributors and members are their own and do not necessarily reflect those of The Liberty Crier.

Navy Yard Shooting in Washinton D.C.After the tragic shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. yesterday, the media was quick to jump on the anti-gun bandwagon. The dust hasn’t even settled, and Senator Dianne Feinstein is already calling for a new ‘assault weapon’ ban.

The media has been focusing on how the shooter was found with a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 ‘assault rifle’. But, is this just an attempt to demonize the popular sporting rifle used by civilians?

NBC News4 reported that the shooter used a shotgun to commit the crime. The shooter later armed himself with weapons that he took from his victims.

When it was over, the suspected gunman lay dead amid an armload of weapons. Sources told News4 that surveillance footage showed that he began his attack with a shotgun, but was found with a 9mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle. The suspected gunman appeared to have seized firearms from two of his victims as he moved through the building. Survellance video shows the gunman entered the NAVSEA building, at 1336 Isaac Hull Ave., with a shotgun.

In another article from NBC News in Washington D.C., they reported:

A shotgun used in the shooting was purchased just last week at gun store in Lorton, Va., authorities said. Authorities said they believe that Alexis [the shooter] then picked up two other weapons — a handgun and an AR-15-style assault weapon — during the shooting spree, taking the sidearm from a police officer he shot and another from a gunsafe or other secure location.

Since this was a military base, they would most likely stock the the M4 / M16A3  rifle in the armory. These are the military weapons the popular “AR” civilian sporting rifles are based on. These are exclusively used by military and law enforcement and have a “selective fire” switch which can change the rate of fire of the weapon (e.g. fully automatic or 3 round burst). They can also be fitted with hardware like bayonets and grenade launchers. These weapons are not for sale to civilians and have been illegal since 1986. Many are stamped: ‘Restricted Military/Government/Law Enforcement Only’

Since 1993, the bolt carrier groups used in AR-15 type rifles for civilians have also employed additional measures to prevent modification. They use a metal alloy wall separating the fire control group from the sear, preventing civilians from converting them to fully automatic weapons. The rifles used by the military are NOT the same as those sold to civilians. The killer didn’t even own an AR-15, he used a shotgun to begin his murderous rampage.

Sadly, these facts won’t stop the media and anti-gun politicians from demonizing modern sporting rifles. They will be calling for more “assault weapon” bans on civilian models of the AR-15. Many people are already questioning the Clinton-era gun bans that are in place on military bases. Gun free zones are most likely the cause of the high death tolls encountered in these massacres. If soldiers were allowed to defend themselves on base, these murderers would be stopped immediately.

The mainstream media loves to go after “scary” looking rifles. It’s easy to create confusion because non-gun owners know very little about firearms. The media and the politicians use this ignorance to push anti-gun laws. It’s up to us, the vigilant gun owners, to point out the truth. Don’t let the media use horrible tragedies (like the Naval Yard Shooting) to spread fear and advance their anti-gun agenda. Civilian AR-15’s were not to blame. Banning modern sporting rifles will not prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future. Don’t let the gun grabbers use lies to take away more of our rights!

Also, shooter was being treated for paranoia, hearing voices and bouts of anger while having a record of violence and gun play. Meanwhile he was not reported as a possible danger and he did not have his security clearance revoked. Laws were not being followed that could have stopped this. Once again.

    • texaschris

More info is coming out. Navy says he was not mentally unfit, and did not have a clearance.

Maybe all these anti gun politicians need to have psychological evaluations to be politicians and lessons on the constitution and the bill of rights that they aren’t supposed to infringe on.

the US GOVERNMENT allowed this carnage to happen……notice that the attacker was shot and killed both in Ft hood and Navy yard by a NON military person…..a woman cop and a federal responder…NO MILITARY response in either event…on and in a MILITARY compound….thank Clinton and the CONGRESS for these events….then you can question the security clearance for a KNOWN troubled person who was allowed access to ..a gun free zone….do we see the US GOVERNMENT..trademark on this and other events yet….boston…sandy hook, wtc …waco….ruby ridge,…aurora….just asking…..imho

    • arnlee

Same old, same old, the bloody hands of our government are all over this…

  • The_Toxic_Avenger

Couldn’t we just ban crazy people from working at secure facilities?

    • binaryloop

Obviously, you’re using sarcasm. But, there were certainly a lot of failures in the security procedures. I’d imagine that the Navy is already reviewing the problems.

But, there’s no solution yet to suicidal maniacs . It’s the same problem we had with Kamikaze pilots in WWII. It’s the same problem with suicide bombers in the Middle East. If someone is hellbent on killing themselves and taking you with them — how do you defend against it?

All the laws and rules and procedures and training in the world will do NOTHING to stop it. The only thing that *might* have a chance to stop it is deadly force. If I can take you out before you have a chance to blow me up then I’ll survive another day. How do you get to the root cause of what makes someone snap and go suicidal? That’s the problem we should all be focused on.

      • The_Toxic_Avenger

        I agree with you.
But I didn’t mean to sound sarcastic. I meant it. Everything pointed to this guy being a loon. But that still didn’t stop him from walking onto the facility with a shotgun. I don’t understand how he managed to slip through the system.

        • binaryloop

Sorry, I misunderstood the sarcasm. How indeed. That’s a great question. This guy gave some warning flags and someone should have picked up on them. But, other people don’t always give warnings. They are perfectly fine right up till the day they snap. It would be nice to be able to detect them. But, how?

          • The_Toxic_Avenger

Good question. I don’t think there is a good answer that doesn’t infringe on everyone’s privacy and rights.
I also agree with you, that making it harder for the sane people to carry weapons only makes us a target rich environment for these whackos.

so, a creep kills a guy, takes HIS weapon, a handgun, then smoehow locates and steals a MILITARY ONLY true assault rifle and kills more with it…. and DumDiFi wants to ban the stolen military weapon type? Wake up, dimbulb, those are ALREADY BANNED. We miundanes cannot own them.

Lanza is alldeged to have used an “assault weapon” at Scammy Crooks…. but the MEDICAL EXAMINER who was the first to view his handiwork asserted that “all the children I saw were killed with a handgun at relatively close range”. The “assault weapon” he is alldeged to have used was “found in the trunk of his car” after it was all over… but I saw the video fotage from an overhead chopper of the officer opening that trunk, finding and removing the weapon, and making it safe. It was a semiautomatic twelve guage shotgun, looks like a Saiga. And DumDiFi wants to ban AR style sporting rifles from the public?

If I were to invade a military base and steal a tank, run about the countryside blowing things up with it, would she start hollering about “banning tanks” because of what I did? Maybe she IS that nuts….. unfit for office.

Ladies and Gentlemen please obtain a copy of the following book: GLADIO, NATO’s Dagger at the Heart of Europe, written by Richard Cottrell and printed by Progressive Publishing. It will open your eyes! Do you remember all the bombings in Italy and Germany in the ’70’s and 80’s? Do you know who did it? Well, it wasn’t the Bader-Meinhoff Gang or the Red Brigades as stated in the international media…Gladio comes to the USA.

@binaryloop:disqus : ” These are exclusively used by military and law enforcement and have a “selective fire” switch which allows operators to choose fully automatic or 3 round burst settings. ”

for the sake of accuracy, this statement is wrong. The choice is “single fire” or “3 round”. To the best of my knowledge no weapon with a ‘3 round’ option has a “full auto” mode. 3 round was developed to replace full auto to both conserve ammo and improve aim.

    • binaryloop

Thanks for pointing this out. Sorry for the confusion. I’ll try to improve the clarity of that sentence.

      • Harry Bennett

No problem, binaryloop. However I was not confused. :) I am just tired of arguing with people over what “full auto” truly means; One pull of the trigger, one bullet fired, RELOADED automatically.

A subtle mistake like that will drive the gun control nuts out of their minds with even more misinformation!

As your article already mentions, this same weapon is illegal for civilians for a host of other reasons but the 3-round burst is considered “full auto” for legal classification purposes (machine gun) even though it is limited full auto.

The Media can do,or,say anything they want to do,or,say, and come back the next day,and do it again. These MSM people don`t even care for the future of their own families, and children..

Not to Worry SUBJECTS, the Main Stream Media, will shortly be reclassifying all semi-automatic rifles as AR-15’s, M-16’s or AK-47’s and if they happen to have a scope on them, they will be classified as Sniper Rifles!

  • Trac

This is just more government excuses to try to take our second amendment rights away from us. This should be dealt with as purely a military matter and has nothing to do with civilians owning fire arms.
