Petition Your State Reps: All Police Must Wear Cameras

We, the undersigned, demand that all police officers in our state be required to wear cameras that stream live to the internet at all times they are interacting with the general public.

Real world tests where police officers have been required to wear cameras have shown that police violence drops by 60% and complaints against police officers drop by 88% when cameras are worn by officers.

The reduction in violence and improved relations between the public and the police are worth the effort alone but when we think of the millions saved in reduced costs from lawsuits by victims of police violence there can be no question about what we need to do.

Please draft and support legislation that requires all police officers to wear cameras at all times that they interact with the public.

It's time to make this common sense approach to policing a reality.

The facts are in. Watched cops are polite cops.

From Reason.com:

“Earlier this year, a 12-month study by Cambridge University researchers revealed that when the city of Rialto, California, required its cops to wear cameras, the number of complaints filed against officers fell by 88% and the use of force by officers dropped by almost 60%. Watched cops are polite cops.”

Massively reduced police violence?  An incredible reduction in police officer complaints?  Tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars potentially saved nationwide in reduced payouts to victims of police abuse?

How can we say no to putting cameras on cops?!

Lets face facts, not all police officers are good.  There are plenty of stories about bad cops doing horrible things to members of the public every single day.  Plenty of police officers will abuse the power of their position to take advantage of members of the public.  Police will steal, rape, plant drugs on innocent people, and much more.  Isn’t it worth the simple step of putting cameras on cops to deter bad cops from taking advantage of the public’s trust?

Of course on the flip side some police officers are good people who do their best to do their job as they understand it.  Well, cameras benefit good cops too.  Having a camera on can be the only way a good cop can fight back against false claims and complaints made against them.  And just as watched cops are polite cops, watched people are polite people too.

Cops wearing cameras is a win/win for everyone.

How do we do it?

We petition our State Reps to require that all police officers wear cameras at all times they are interacting with the public.

We’ll need your help to make this happen.  Can you take part in any of these three calls to action?

1.) Sign the petition (top right of page).

2.) Contact us if you would like to be a part of our petition delivery team.  With your help we’re creating a petition delivery network to make sure State reps hear our voices.

3.) Spread the word to your friends, family and social networks.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Petition text:

We, the undersigned, demand that all police officers in our state be required to wear cameras at all times they are interacting with the general public.

It’s time to make this common sense approach to policing a reality.

Done! and Done! This really is a no brainer: saves money & reduces corruption. I liked the “common sense” touch. The Democrats have been monopolizing that term for far too long. Let’s take it back and get this idea implemented.

  • Chris Bergman

If they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear, right?

  • Pa Brad

Does anyone else have privacy concerns about this? If this is streaming live to the internet, victims idenitities are revealed, and all encounters are broadcast indiscriminately. Personally, while I think the cameras will make both police and citizens accountable, I don’t think I need the whole world watching while I get ticketed for speeding. There must be a better way to implement this than instant streaming to the internet.

    • TrevorLyman

It is ‘live to the net’ but not live to the public. I suppose this needs more clarification. The video is captured live back at the police station so no officer can ‘accidentally lose’ the video but they would not be publicly released.

      • Pa Brad

thanks for that clarification. Couldn’t it also be captured by an independent party to prevent the police station from “accidentally” losing incriminating video? Who is “watching the watchers?”

        • TrevorLyman

I’m all for it but I think it’s a hard case to make that the back up copy and the original copy were somehow both lost at the same time. Especially when one copy is on a server in a safe room that no one but the higher-ups would have access to. I guess the main thing to keep in mind is that the test of this program worked.

“the number of complaints filed against officers fell by 88% and the use of force by officers dropped by almost 60%.”

That’s pretty impressive. If we can improve on what they have already accomplished with suggestions like yours then even better!

        • Jeff

These video’s would be uploaded live to a cloud service so they cannot be deleted from the recording device. There are smartphone apps that stream and store your video to a private (password protected) site for free. Anyone who records the police should have one of these apps installed and ready to go. Here’s an article on recording police, Rule #6 deals with these apps. http://www.thedailysheeple.com/7-rules-for-recording-police_042013

          • Pa Brad

Thanks, that’s great info, I’ve already copied that article and visited several links!

  • Daredstone

There’s a typo in the text of the petition… it should be 88%, not %88…

    • TrevorLyman

      Thank you! It’s fixed now.

  • Duke1632

I want this for all so-called public servants, particularly those at the federal level. Like, for example, members of congress, president, and cabinet, etc.

    • EliseR

Yes, public servants should have no right to privacy at all. Let’s put cameras on teachers too. And doctors and nurses so we can catch them making mistakes. And paper carriers so I can see them throw my paper in the bushes and NOT on the front steps. And airline workers because they are kind of rude. And the kid at McDonalds who makes my burger wrong. I need proof of everyone who may wrong me in any way.

      • TrevorLyman

He clearly said public servants. I would limit this to public servants who regularly administer violence against the public as this is where the law suits come from and this is where people suffer from abuse. So I would limit this to the police.

And btw- it goes both ways. There are certainly times when the police will be protected by the cameras as well!

        • EliseR

No, he clearly said, “so-called public servants,” showing that he has little respect for those that work for the government. But perhaps he doesn’t even know what a public servant is.

  • Gerg

why the hell should we demand every cop wear cameras? Who is gonna pay for them, seriously? It is so impractical. I’m the only one who sees the potential for these to eventually be live feed if the masses actually ask for increased surveillance? The point has been made that cops act more polite on camera, but this petition is complete un-thought out. If you feel passionately about this topic, check out CopBlock.org I love their material, Rochester, NY could probably use this tactic, but not everywhere, all cops.

Who is going to pay for this? Are you willing to pay more in taxes? And you really have no issues being filmed when you are pulled over for a traffic violation? Or a DUI? Or soliciting?

    • TrevorLyman

It’s actually 100% the opposite. Untold tens (if not hundreds) of millions are paid out every year in police misconduct court cases. If cops wearing cameras reduces police violence the tax payers will save millions and millions of dollars in reduced lawsuits and payouts. The cost of the cameras are minuscule in comparison to the savings they will generate. This has already been covered in the text of the article (above).

The footage is not released to the public but is stored should the need for it arise.

      • EliseR

NSA files aren’t released to the public either, but they are an invasion of privacy. Why not just have everyone wear cameras so they government knows what we are doing all the time. That would cut down on crime too. Plus, if you are wrongly accused you can prove your innocence right away.

        • TrevorLyman

You’re really reaching here EliseR. You shouldn’t come into this with your mind made up already. You can’t argue we shouldn’t save tens if not hundreds of millions in court costs and payouts because there will be a very small upfront cost. If the police can afford to buy $250K armored cars then they can afford this.

If you want to wear a camera at all times that’s up to you, but that has absolutely nothing to do with this.

          • EliseR

And you don’t even know what the upfront costs will amount to. All across the country our schools are underfunded. And instead of putting money into education, you want to put it into filming cops. That makes no sense.

          • TrevorLyman

Well maybe the schools would be funded if we weren’t paying out hundreds of millions in court costs and lawsuits! It makes absolute sense. You’re not thinking about what you’re saying at all!!

          • EliseR

And you are so caught up in your ridiculous outrage that you can’t see the big picture. Good luck with the petition.

That petition is incomplete. It should also require that those cameras be ON and recording at all times, and that they not be obstructed by the officer in any way. In addition, the footage should be publicly available, ALL of it, UNLESS the subject in the video requests otherwise (because she may be nude when the cops busts in her door, etc.) And finally, there should be very stiff penalties for police officers not having their cameras recording properly or at all, or not providing the recording to the public, and in any case where the cop cannot provide a recording of his/her interaction with the public it must be assumed in legal decisions that the cop is in the wrong and the member of the public in the right.

  • DarthPug

This is something that needs to happen!

  • Eddie Vedder

I think a petition needs to go to President, I think 100,000 votes are needed? This should be a federal law that every single street cop wear a camera.

    • James Coe

Hold on Eddie, we have enough federal laws, you’re in the wrong place if you want the federal government to have any more control over anything. The states have all grown up and can take care of themselves. Ok maybe not all of them, but you’re free to move to one that has.
