Why Switzerland Has The Lowest Crime Rate In The World

December 24, 2012

From the YouTube description (Video uploaded on Nov. 2009): When thinking about the mass extermination camps of a holocaust’, think…

The key to freedom is to be able to have the ability to defend yourself and if you don’t have the tools to do that, then you’re going to be at the mercy of whomever wants to put you away.

Guns are deeply rooted within Swiss culture – but the gun crime rate is so low that statistics are not even kept.

The country has a population of six million, but there are estimated to be at least two million publicly-owned firearms, including about 600,000 automatic rifles and 500,000 pistols.

This is in a very large part due to Switzerland’s unique system of national defense, developed over the centuries.

Instead of a standing, full-time army, the country requires every man to undergo some form of military training for a few days or weeks a year throughout most of their lives.

Between the ages of 21 and 32 men serve as frontline troops. They are given an M-57 assault rifle and 24 rounds of ammunition which they are required to keep at home.

Once discharged, men serve in the Swiss equivalent of the US National Guard, but still have to train occasionally and are given bolt rifles. Women do not have to own firearms, but are encouraged to.

Here’s a fun fact you neglected to mention: the Swiss are not legally allowed to own the ammunition for that rifle. They may acquire ammunition at a shooting range, but it must be expended there. All Swiss have unloaded guns with no ammunition. Communities have armories with ammunition and in that way they can defend themselves as a community, but not as individuals against crimes. Further, Swiss are not just given their rifles upon leaving the service, they must apply to keep them. Owning a gun in Switzerland is easy, but you must have a permit and can only purchase 3 guns with it. Fewer Swiss households possess guns (29%) than American households (43%). Do some actual research.

Here is a link for you: http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-switzerland.htm

“Any ammunition bought on the private market is also registered. Ammunition can be bought unregistered at government subsidized shooting ranges, but, by law, one must use all the ammunition at the range. (Unfortunately, this law is not really enforced, and gives Swiss gun owners a way to collect unregistered ammunition.)”

So ammo can be bought, you just have to register it and it’s easy to get ammo without registering it. Maybe you should do some actual research?

        How is that unfortunate Trevor?

        • TrevorLyman

If you look again at the text you are referring to you’ll see I’m quoting a section from the source. There are quotes around what I’ve put there and so they are not my words. Understand now?

guns don’t kill people, bullets kill people,” is like saying “I haven’t raped anyone, but my penis has lol

    • Somebody with a brain

Point is, they have fewer crimes than us. You lose.

  • It is what it is.

You neglected to also mention that not only is ammunition abundant and accessible for privately owned firearms. Most households in Switzerland possess firearms. The 29 percent you are referring to, is for government supplied rifles and the ammunition you are referring to is government supplied. Your research failed to expose the whole truth.

  • Jeffrey Kesselman

It os very important understand that Switzerland is a VERY small country with a mono-culture and very little economic disparity.

There just isn’t a lot of conflict in their society, period. If we had so little conflict, maybe we could handle guns, too.

    • TrevorLyman

That’s not the reason Jeffrey. It’s the multi-billion dollar highly militarized and gang growing drug war we’ve got going on. That creates the culture of violence you’re talking about.

  • Anoon

Americans have a very bad tendency of ignoring culture and not blaming them for causing crimes.

Guns are not the issue here. If people want to kill someone, they will go ahead and do just that.

    • Timothy Sterling

I doubt you know the slightest things about Americans. Go cry in a hole.

  • Don’t be a victim

Here is the true point! Ask any criminal if they know the home or person is armed they will pass on the chance of getting wounded or killed. Duh common sense people! Our country is lacking so much in common sense it’s not even funny! If you don’t like guns and prefer to be a victim then don’t own one! But don’t tell me I have to be a victim as well. The Swiss have it right! The other stat that no one seems to ever Is everything ok, sweetheart?mention is that almost all victims in the U.S. are either unarmed or don’t own a gun!!!!

  • Joe

Their crime rate is low because they have no black people. Every state in America with a high crime rate is full of blacks…

    • big matt

      hahahaha love it

      • woody

        Man you are so right

    • the black guy

Well, according to current and past statistics, the U.S. would still lead the world murder rate even if you tallied up murders done by whites only… Oh, and dont forget the whites that murder for Uncle Sam.

  • jemoeder

Some sources claim that Iceland has the lowest crime rate in the world…
